A few weeks ago those of you who follow us on gimpbook might have caught a glimpse of a video promoting Squarepusher’s new album ‘Ufabulum’ which is going to be released May 14 via Warped Records.

Well, we can now share the first track from his new album and for the first time in a while we’ve been left speechless. You know all those acts who tried to be really edgy and forward thinking? You know Oizo, or dare we say it, Skrillex – Squarepusher is like a deity to those guys. But the main difference between Squarepusher and the rest of the copy-cat riff raff is he makes it work 100% of the time. You don’t get one minute half-baked ideas – Squarepusher is far to good for that.

‘Dark Steering’ is a case in point, it so leftfield you think you might be listening to some future Aoki wobbles, but as soon as a groove begins to appear amongst the caustic beeps and saturated wobbles, he moves the track on to other sonic intensities whether it be moody electronica or off-the-cuff glitchy electro.

The main man behind the mask said about the album: “For a while I had apocalyptic nightmares about trails of nuclear missiles in the night sky. So I aimed to recreate that strange combination of exhilaration, terror and sadness both visually and emotionally through this piece. It lead to the idea of a spacecraft leaving earth at vast speed to escape, but oddly the music also made me think of it flying through a library. So I generated the visual aspect such that, as the piece progresses, it seems as if the viewer is ever accelerating through massive corridors of books.”

File under: Welcome to the darkside.

‘Ufabulum’ is released on phosphorescent Special Edition Vinyl and Special Edition CD (both include 3 track Enstrobia EP on CD), phosphorescent T-Shirt with album download, Regular CD and Download formats.
