After 20 years the main sample on Daft Punk’s ‘Fresh’ has finally been uncovered

After 20 years an enterprising Redditor has finally solved one of the great Daft Punk mysteries — what track did Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter sample for their 1997 track, ‘Fresh’?

Many fans had speculated it was a sample from something called ‘Piano Man’ — it turns out, however, it’s actually a sample taken from Viola Wills’ 1981 disco song ‘If You Leave Me Now’.

It’s truly amazing to think that an album that’s 20-years-old still has undiscovered samples that are only just being discovered today.

And a tip of the hat to NOIRA/Ncorpmusic who apparently found it by accident after he too was trawling old disco records to sample, just like Daft Punk were in 1997.

You can see how the sample was used by Daft Punk to create their track ‘Fresh’ below.
