Jean Tonique is the latest artist to get a release on Yuksek’s ever-impressive Partyfine imprint with six tracks of up-beat disco pop.
Split across 6 tracks and three guest vocalists, ‘You’ represents Tonique’s finest work to date. The EP’s opener features vocals from Iris and is a summery slice of disco pop that’ll have you pining for beaches and mojitos. ‘Near You’ shares a similar summery disposition, but is given a sturdier back bone thanks to a thudding 4/4 beat; it’s basically an ode to modern-day French touch, brimming with live instrumentation, filtered basslines, and some stunningly intricate synth flourishes.
‘Fame For Sale’ leans more towards the funk side of disco, and features a stunning vocal from Jessie Carlton who is then paired-up with neon synths, rubbery basslines, and is just the sort of track that encapsulates everything we love about Yuksek’s Partyfine imprint. Moving swiftly on, ‘My Love/ Your Soul’ is one of the EP’s more instrumental affairs, but instead of a full vocal, you have Tonique showcasing his production prowess as he loops and cuts the vocal over keyed up pianos lines and plucky guitars.
‘La Rencontre’ is a proper French affair and sees guest vocalist Gion Arto singing in French – the resulting song sounds like something Tellier would be more than happy to put his name to. ‘What You Wanna Do’ is a more of a lo-fi, skittish funk number, backed by balmy chords and texture basslines. And the EP’s finisher ‘You & Me’ is the perfect way to end to an incredibly accomplished debut EP from Partyfine’s latest party-starter.
