DJ Hero almost sounds like the name of a character from the pap DJ Hero game – thankfully it is a breaks producer from America who is gaining praise from loads of the notable UK breaks artists including Plump DJs and Krafty Kuts.
We can see why breaks is popular over the pond – bangers run wild in the open plains of America and there’s nothing wrong with bangers as long as they’re done properly – done with plenty of musical salt and pepper we think.
Mr Hero as were going to call him, as he looks like he was in Heroes’, has a new EP out on Disruptive Beats and is the first part of a brand new series of EPs showcasing a new wave of talent in the breaks scene, artists who are reinventing the sounds and the very scene itself apparently. Each EP features an artist with a new original track, a remix, plus their interpretation of a back catalogue classic from the Ground Level vaults.
The series will finish with an album bringing all the sounds of the EPs together in a DJ mix that will show that breaks is still relevant in modern dance music.
First up is our man Mr Hero. And he’s done a splendid job indeed it tickled that soft spot we have for breaks perfectly.
It opens with ‘Game Face’ an acid breaks homage – but it’s breaks in the purest sense – throw in some clever vocal wizardry and it’s definitely the sort of track the Plumps would be all over
His remix of Break The Box’s ‘Groovey Moods’ is a plump sounding piece of ravey-breaks – with a really over the top synth, you’ll see what we mean, but its got a big breaks kick to pass it off, and to be honest this sort of sound across both breaks and electro is gaining many friends at the moment – especially the from over-the-top crew.
The remixer for this package is the Basement Freaks, dropping down the BPM and making a Ghetto Funk cut out of the track.
