It’s hard not to see Apple’s decision to remove the trusty headphone jack from its latest iPhone 7 handset as a cynical ploy to sell you a new pair of headphones.

They new iPhone comes with a pair of normal wired headphones that connect to the device via the lightning port thanks to a free adaptor that comes with each handset.

The issue is the lightning port is the only way to charge your handset – so if you’re at a party and you want to play music on a phone that’s low on juice you’re going to have quite a dilemma on your hands; do you charge the phone or play music? As you’ll know longer be able to do both – which seems like a huge oversight to us.

The new wireless AirPods will set you back $159, and will last five hours, which on the face of it isn’t very long at all. What isn’t clear is why Apple has decided to ditch the headphone jack, other than being a bit greedy.
