As a Live band they were legendary; The Red Light shows though open a new chapter. A four decks, multi F-X, audiovisual DJ experience rooted in the warehouse, delivered stadium style.

Over the past decade, Groove Armada have become established as one of the planet’s most-loved and biggest selling dance acts. The duo, Tom Findlay and Andy Cato, have stormed the charts and headlined stages at the world’s biggest festivals. Then, in 2010, they redefined the GA sound. Black Light, their 6th studio album, achieved massive critical acclaim, and a year headlining festivals from Australia to Moscow ended in Los Angeles and a Grammy nomination. Also playing on the night are DJ Fresh, Kenny Dope, Dariius Syrossian, Johhny Cade, Waifs & Strays, DC Breaks, Heidi and many more…

HBF: Hi guys thanks for your time. 2011 saw the launch of Red Light. How has the year been so far? Any particular highlights?

We’ve had another great year on the Space Terrace. We took care of every detail in that room – from where the podiums are to the brightness of the bar lights. The result was electric. There have been some super sized Ibizan free parties we’ve done on the beach as well. Alongside europe’s usual festivals and weekends from Kazakstan to Korea, it’s been a good summer.

HBF: So what is Red Light? How does it differ from your old Live show?

It’s a whole new experience. The last live show was just that – live. We spent a long time working out how a band could play electronic music that was happening there and then but which sounded properly heavy. Once we got that system nailed, we had 8 years of amazing gigs.

The Black Light album saw us record that onstage sound and with it, make our best record. The tour that followed was the high point of the whole GA Live experience. So we decided to leave it there – at the top. Red Light is the opposite of all that. A return to the warehouse.

To the decks and fx where it all started. So it’s a DJ thing, a warehouse vibe, but delivered stadium style.

HBF: Judging by Trax Vol 1 you guys have revisited your deeper, more underground electronic roots. Quite a shift from the large ‘dance’ records of the past, not to mention albums like Black Light and Soundboy Rock. Why the shift back to more traditional house and techno?

The sound has always been there. We’ve been in DJ booths all over the world for a long time. But when the band was on the road and there were those kind of albums to be made, we didn’t get the chance to make the kind of music we love to play as DJs. That and being stuck on a major label where tunes take 2 years to come out. When we stopped the band, we also finally fulfilled our original record contract and now we’re free to do what we want, go deeper, make the tunes we feel like.

HBF: Do you guys pay a lot of attention to what’s happening in the electronic scenes at the moment? Who are you feeling?

Yes we get out there, stay on top of it. We’re DJing all the time and we run a festival so we’re in amongst it all. There’s a return to the basement vibe all round. What happens in the basement is a free for all at the moment. There’s the jacked up return to the old house sound

- something we’re right into – but there’s also a harder take on the berlin scene, NYC disco antics, good time Hip Hop stuff – whatever, whenever, and loads of it is sounding great.

HBF: You’re known for your collaborations. Of those you have yet to work with, which artist would you most like to do something with and why? (Any genre)

Bob Dylan. Anyone who can make Blonde on Blonde is worth having a beer with.

HBF: Number 1 albums, headline slots across the globe, grammy nominations. What else do you want to achieve with Groove Armada?

What we’ve always tried to achieve. Music and gigs we’re proud of, spreading good music as far as we can.

HBF: You’re headlining the big Coloursound event in Leeds in December. What can the crowd expect from your headline show?

Leeds is always a special one for me as it’s where I was brought up and where my house music experience began. The opening night of Basics remains one of the all time top nights out. Kaos, Soak, The Gallery, seeing the Stone Roses in the Warehouse. Good times. Our gigs there have always been some of the best. The Red Light experience is now in full swing. It’s an audio-visual, decks and fx journey, rooted in ’88 but delivered 2011 style. See you there.

LS City records have been on a flyer recently and Richard Dinsdale is looking to continue this with his impressive new EP ‘Somatic Industrial’, which was released on Beatport yesterday.

Opening track ‘Do You Think About Me’ is full of great industrial pops and clicks, and with a monster kick drum backing the track it certainly made for dance-floor. A simple, but pleasing melody combines with the vocal for a peak time builder that you can expect to hear on dance floors for months to come.

Last but not least “Put Your Hands Up’ takes it to the next level with techno written all over it. Shuffling beats and moody bass make for a full on Techno stomper. Dinsdale looks to showcase his ability in making contrasting music. So less swinging beats and more repetition in-sues, the breakdown is a welcomed rest from the intensity of this Techno cut.

Overall this is a solid release from LS City Records and showcases their talent in both Techno and Tech-House. Expect to hear more from Dinsdale & LS City soon.

Ministry Resident and Toolroom Knight, Richard Dinsdale is a name that you’re sure to hear over the next few years, starting off in humble surroundings in Surrey, Dinsdale is now part of Toolroom Knights and is about to release a new EP Somatic Industrial for label of the moment – LS City Records.

We got a chance to speak to Dinsdale about his influences, Toolroom, his new EP and what he has planned for in 2010.

Richard Dinsdale highlights the Motown his mother played has a massive influence on his music, he said: ”I grew up listening to lots of different styles of music, mainly Motown because that’s what my mum would play all day when cleaning the house. Apart from listening to the charts during the 80’s, I’d listen to a lot of 70’s disco and funk. So I guess I try to incorporate the disco samples and various synth sounds from the 60/70’s into my tracks.”

Variety is obviously important in his music and he believes that this can equal longevity and prevent boredom, he said: “The whole reason I love making music is to experiment on every track I do and try and make it different from the last, but obviously keeping the club feel there. I also work on Adverts and TV productions – so that is a good way of getting away from making straight up club tracks all the time.”

Dinsdale reckons that we will hear an new level of production from him as he is new spending more time making club music, he said: “I’ll put my hands up and say I wished I’d worked on a few of my old tracks a bit more, but this year I have definitely turned a new leaf and pressured myself into putting more time into my club tracks. You can definitely tell the difference with the production that will be coming out in the next couple of months.”

Dinsdale is just about to release his Somatic Industrial EP on Leeds label, LS City Records and he is excited about being part of something new from the beginning, he said: “It’s been great as they are new label and it’s great to be part of something like that, just like Toolroom when they first started out. It’s also a good thing as it combines the fact that I’m a semi resident at Filth, Leeds and I’ve tried to incorporate the Filth sound in both of these tracks.”

He added: “The first track “Do You Think About Me” is a track I would play in the first part of my set at Filth and the second “Put Your Hands Up” would be near the end as it’s more on the Techno side.”

Dinsdale will be returning to his Filth residency and he can’t wait, he said: “You can expect to hear new Techno, Tech-house and lots of new bits I’ve made in the studio.”

He remembers fondly the first time he played Filth, he said: “The first time I played for Filth I was blown away at how good the crowd is in Leeds and the team behind Filth, Danny Savage, Alex Jukes too many to name – they are fantastic to work with. I look forward to the event months beforehand. It’s just a good quality night with a crowd that loves music.”

New Leeds label LSCity Records and Jamie Fisher are off to a flyer with their first release ‘Shape’ and it’s the tenth most viewed (or is listened to) video on Youtube last week – it’s already getting great support from Morillo and Dubfire.

Jamie started as a 10-year-old listening to techno and had mastered the decks by 13, the ensuing years of practice paid off when he was given a residency at a Doncaster warehouse party at the age of 17. As is natural nowadays for any aspiring DJ, Jamie also set to work making his own records whilst continuing to DJ alongside some of the scene’s biggest players, and this Shapes EP is his latest offering.

Leeds’ Filth are celebrating their 3rd birthday on the 26th February and they have organised one hell of a party.

Faithless, Funkagenda, and John Dahlback will all rock the o2 Academy, Leeds and help Filth celebrate their third birthday.

Faithless will be bringing their Live Soundsystem down to play their biggest hits and new material from their forthcoming 2010 LP ‘Calling all the Faithful’.

Other notable inclusions will be Alex Metric who has stormed the scene this year including a breathtaking NYE set at the WHP – which impressed everyone who saw it.

Expect the O2 to be filled with motley crew of breathers, acrobats, stunt performers, blasts of ice cannons to get lost in, some mind bending visuals and the usual red-hot Filth dancers!

They have just sent over John Dahlback’s February mix for you to sink your teeth into and get you in the party mood.
