We’re not massive fans of M.I.A, but we do like anything to do with music video king-pin Romain Garvas – his video CV reads like a who’s who of cool: Justice’s Stress and A Cross The Universe, DJ Mehdi’s ‘Signatune’ and, of course, M.I.A’s controversial ‘Born Free’ are amongst some of his finest work.

M.I.A said about the video: ‘It was dope to have so many people from so many different backgrounds speaking so many different languages come together to create something that we believed in,” says M.I.A about the video. “I thought I was gonna die on the shoot when I saw the drifting. It was a four day shoot so everyone was on edge the whole time specifically ME when I had to do bluesteel singing to the camera while the cars did doughnuts on the wet road ten feet away. In my mind I was thinking how I was gonna deliver the video to Vice with no legs.”

Not content with releasing details of their long-awaited new album ‘Wonky’ as well as announcing four UK Summer festival headline appearances this week, Orbital today unveil the official video for new track ‘Straight Sun’.

Orbital have now confirmed their headline UK festival appearances this Summer.

Taking in The Beat Herder in June, Bloc and The Secret Garden Party in July and Bestival in September, Orbital are gearing up for some very special Summer gigs.

The Chems are finally going to try and bottle the magic and excitement of their live performance into film format, a tall order you’d think, but ‘Don’t Think’ (we know the name is terrible) is the first film to have been recorded in full Dolby 7.1 – which should go some way to capturing a bit of that Chems magic.

We saw them in August this year, and not only was the music amazing and the visuals spellbinding;  it’s the die-hard Chemical fans that make the duo’s performances so legendary. During the big finale for their set – one die-hard fan had had managed to sneak a flare in to be let off at the perfect moment (the big break down) – he let the flare off much to the crowds delight and it went from being a great performance to a legendary one. These are moments that just can’t be capture unless you experience it for yourself, in a muddy field, with thousands fellow ravers.

Filmed with 20 cameras at a headline show at Japan’s very own Glastonbury – Fujirock Festival - Don’t Think is the first time the full Chemical Brothers’ live experience has been captured on film. Directed by long-term visuals collaborator Adam Smith this full-length concert movie places cameras in the centre of the stage as well as at the very heart of the crowd to perfectly capture a fan’s eye view of the heightened emotional reactions of the audience seeing the band at their very best.

Adam Smith said: “After 18 years of working on The Chemical Brothers live show we have finally captured it on film; you could almost say it’s 18 years in the making The aim was to create a different type of concert film for a different type of show.

“I wanted to capture what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd as well as showing and combining the visuals featured in the show with the footage we captured on this one night; to see how the music and visuals emotionally affect and connect with the audience. By using small unobtrusive cameras – and with thanks to the kindness of the amazing Japanese crowd – we were given privileged insights into the private moments of joy, fear and ecstatic escapism from reality that this show induces.

“Included in that are flights of fantasy around the festival that are going on inside an audience member’s head. We also allowed some of the images from the show to head off the screens and invade the festival. Over the course of the film, we are taken on a journey through the psychedelic trip that is the Chemical Brothers live experience.”

Gesaffelstein is a young french electro/techno producer who is getting tongue’s whagging in the music world, he makes slow chugging French techno, with a hint of electro. To us his sound is a lot like fellow new techno dude Mondkopf. Gesa is the protege of the Hacker and has just released a new video teasing his latest release on Turbo Recordings.

Retro/Grade have released the music video for their new EP, Mindfighter, out this July on Deconstruction Records.

‘Reset’ was the track of the night when we saw the duo play the midnight set for New Year’s eve and their new track ‘Mindfighter’ definitely continues the chrome-plated italo-pop aesthetic.

Following on from the hypnotic disco juggernaut of ‘Reset’, the EP’s title track Mindfighter arrives like a throbbing, chrome-plated vision of the future, the sound of Kraftwerk’s Robots breaking free from their rigid teutonic programming and storming the discotheque.

Over a pulsing drumbeat, bubbling synths and increasingly urgent strings ‘Mindfighter’s’ agitated vocals push the track closer and closer to the edge of reason, perfectly capturing that moment on the dancefloor where things start to spiral out of control. ‘Mindfighter’ comes complete with a time tripping video directed by Weirdcore, also responsible for the band’s epic live visuals.

Chilly Gonzales is a world record piano player, a Jewish rapper, a producer, a soundtrack composer and he also achieved numerous album of the year accolades for his Boy’s Noize produced Ivory Tower album.

There’s no doubt that Chilly Gonzales is a very talented. So when we heard he was going to do a full orchestral rap album we raised more than an eyebrow.

The album is a very short but sweet clocking in at a paltry 27 minutes long and is less a traditional rap album and more a cacophony of clever one-liner rhymes about the state of the music industry.

Call us cynical but less than half an hour seems a little mean. Especially from someone who has so much to say. Anyway it’s very good. But way too short. If you heard the medley given away a few months ago – there not much you haven’t heard.

There’s no doubt that It’s highly entertaining, but is over way to quickly and almost falls into the bear pit of being a novelty album.

This time, the self-appointed “musical genius” admits that, “the genius is in the arrangements”, and this because it was produced by his brother, Christophe Beck, who is a Emmy award winning composer.

The CD opens with ‘Super Villain Music’ and an opening one-liner “come listen to a jerk talk about how hard he works” it does sound like a fusion of a hollywood orchestra coupled with the snappy clever raps of the wise-cracking Uncle Gonzo.

It’s a very honest and endearing portrayal of what he thinks of himself, his music and his schizophrenic set of talents.

‘Self Portrait’ starts with a self obsessed line of “I said I was a musical genius I have repeated until it became meaningless. Because you assumed i was a joking and then you thought about it like he’s not joking” . The album’s orchestral undertones are clean, classy and really add to the novelty of the album.

Many of the tracks come across more as rap confessions more than anything, but it’s hard not to draw a smile from the numerous jokes a long the way.

Highs come in the form ‘Different Kind Of Prostitute’ where he slams other unnamed entertainers and their ego’s with some clever rhymes like. “Other entertainers are incompetent, they wanna sound hard like consonants, but it’s all false confidence. The audience is dominant”.

‘Rap Race’ talks about the perceived idea that if you don’t like rap then your probably racist – it’s tongue and cheek and will be probably lost on those of you who don’t like and rap and hip-hop. But it’s highly entertaining stuff. He rhymes “If you don’t like rap then face it you’ll probably hate this. Then your probably racist. Maybe you like the XX or the Gossip”.

As he says in the final track, “My new album’s finished, you might not like it / But it’s good for you, eat your spinach”. And if you choose not to, he’ll be along with a new flavour before too long. As that final song also advises, “one of these days I’ll shut up and play piano…”

Chilly Gonzales’ new album shows different side to Gonzo many probably didn’t realise existed, but as far as orchestral rap album goes – he and his brother have nailed it. It’s clever, entertaining and incredibly original.

We guarantee you never hear anything quite like this – and for that it’s a very good album. It has its problems. But if you’ve been to see him live you’ll be right at home. More comedy rap dude than gangsta rapper – but that’s what makes him stand out from the crowd. It shows that rap can be more than ho’s, guns and 40′s.

HBF Rating 7/10

Uncle Gonz has another hilarious new video, directed by Jonathan Barre (“Never Stop,” “You Can Dance”) for “Party In My Mind.” it definetley worth a watch.

Is Tropical have made an amazing video for their equally amazing track the ‘The Greek’ – could this be the best music video of the year? Almost certainly.
