One act who doesn’t really partake in mixtapes is dutch funk maverick Shook – well this ends today – he’s made a mixtape of music that has influenced the music he makes. If you’ve ever wanted to know what makes him tick this is the perfect place to start.

The fine folks at Vice are hosting another one of their special engagements alongside Dell and Intel – and this one promises to be their best yet.

They have lined up French indie artist Woodkid – aka Yoann Lemoine – to do a special one off performance from the first floor of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

If you’re not familiar with the alluring talents of Woodkid, then all you need to do is watch the video for his spell-binding track ‘Iron’ which went viral in March last year and has clocked up more than 9 million views.

The show kicks off at 7.30pm GMT tomorrow and you will be able to watch the performance from this page. Better still you will be able to interact and shape the performance by partaking in a number of fan engagements from choosing the tracks he performs to even getting a track dedicated to yourself.

Oliver is the moniker of two LA producers who are making quite a splash with their funk-laden big-room disco. Compromised of Vaughn Oliver (U-Tern) and Oliver Goldstein (aka Oligee) their first EP ‘Dirty Talk’ is out today via the always on the money Kitsune.

Disco like many genres has got a large, and loyal, following – but can it ever reach the heights of a trance-y mcbobins like Tiesto? Or dare I say dubstep’s new poster boy Skrillex? If you’re an avid follower of blogs (which you are) you’ll already think it already has. Well, not quite, but just maybe with Oliver.

LA duo Oliver might well be the duo to take disco to the next level; Dirty Talk is full of big-room swagger. The lead track has everything an anthem needs; catchy, but, clever vocals, which have a classic Felix Da Housecat quality to them – Americanised, if you will – super-snappy percussion a la Prydz and a smorgasbord of sumptuous synths – overall it’s straight out of disco’s top draw.

The other original comes in the form of ‘Walk With Me’ a smoother cut of disco straight of out Quincy’s Jones’ best-selling guide “How To Make Funk White Boy”. The gurgling bass hooks dance around with equally happy synths to make a track that is so full of the joys of summer it has the words summer tattooed on it’s face.

The originals sit alongside a couple of stellar remixes from Black Van (another of Kris Menace’s alter egos). Basically, it’s amazing. If there was an award for the most hands-in-the-air disco track of the last 12 months this would win hands down.

Punks Jump Up thankfully take ‘Dirty Talk’ in the other direction to make a proper underground cut, no compromises are shown as they infuse it with a heady shot of European drug fuel.

We saw Erol Alkan at the Warehouse Project a few weeks ago and he played a new Justice remix of ‘Canon’, we can’t be sure if it’s this one or someone else’s, but it’s wasn’t brilliant. And this isn’t either.

File under: Maybe, just maybe.

Foxes is the alias of Southhampton-born Louisa Rose Allen, she’s another ones of these 20-something singer songwriters; impossibly pretty, amazing voice and the ability to write swashbuckling leftfield pop songs at the drop of a hat, she’s about to release her debut EP via Neon Golds Records on 7-inch vinyl Jan 16 and digitally January 29.

Now, what’s the best way to introduce a new singer to the world’s hipsters? Well, get a Frenchman. Who the most exciting of the Frenchies at the moment? Easy. Monsieur Adi.

Adi knows what he’s doing when it comes to remixing vocals, he’s a go-to-guy. As expected he keeps the vocal intact, he takes inspiration from the originals marching band aesthetic and runs with this theme for a 7-minute call to arms of rousing drums, synths and Allen’s vocal talents. Epic doesn’t really convey the energy and positivity of this track.

All she needs to do now is pout a lot in her press shots and she’ll be the next big thing.

Mumbai Science is the brainchild of two mild-mannered Belgian’s Maarten Elen and Jonas Kiesekoms. In a previously life they were scientists and also played together in a rock band, where they covered Soulwax tracks. Now, they are the first in line to be the kings of Future techno.

Future Techno is a new off-shoot which it takes the darker, more unhinged sounds found in the basements of Berlin, and combines them with the high-energy and impact of French electro to create Mumbai Science’s unique sound.

The follow-up release to 2011 anthem ‘Lotus’ is ‘Unified Theory’. Three EP’s that will be released over the next three months. From the moment you listen to ‘Researchers’, you know that you’re listening to producers heavily influenced by the DeWale brothers, we’ve said it before but ‘Researchers’ sounds like long-lost DeWale techno.

The whole track is underpinned with a sublime vocoded vocal, which is then scientifically sliced and diced to create a mind-boggling electro track than seems to continually build upon a crescendo of white noise and big drops.

‘Commandments’ is a much more deranged, darker offering – more Berlin basement than Paris disco – it hypnotises you with uneasy basslines, deep vocals and jittery percussion. They’re the two sides of the same coin, but show-off perfectly the dark and light side of the Belgium duo.

Mumbai Science took some time out of their schedule to answer some of our questions. It went a little something like this….

You have three EP’s coming out in quick succession. What was the concept behind this?

Martin: Well, I guess, we started out by making loads of tracks, and we couldn’t decide which ones to release. We loved them all and really couldn’t decide which ones we should release. We couldn’t do it as a single EP; as there are too many tracks. And there weren’t enough to do an album; it’s not big enough – so we decided we would compromise and release three EP’s in a row.

Unified theory Part 1 explores the sound between techno and electro, but how do the other two parts differ?

Martin: Well, the second EP is quite a bit different. It’s deeper and darker, and the third is similar to the first. If that makes sense.

Jonas: Yeah. It’s the typical trilogy thing – like Star Wars. The first one is pretty normal, then the second one is really dark and then the final part of the trilogy no one knew what to expect. What we do know, is everyone is going to have an opinion on the final part.

There are know remixes in Unified theory Part 1.  Are there any planned?

Martin: Nothing yet, maybe later. We wanted to focus on our original tracks, for now. There are six tracks, if we got some remixes then it become 12 and it would become too much – so we aren’t really thinking about it. But, maybe later.

How long have you been working on the tracks? Do you work together or separately when writing music?

Jonas: We’ve been working on them since the summer, just after the release of ‘Lotus’. We took a week off and made some of it then. Martin can’t stop making tracks, he always making something new, but its taken quite a while to get them finished.

Martin: Our studio is at my place. So the tracks are made at my place, I send them to Jonas for feedback, and I implement the changes and we work it like that. We’re constantly sending stuff back and forth. We use both software and hardware. We tend to use Logic, with loads of plugins, but we also have our Moog and other bits of hardware. But, to be honest, I don’t have a strong opinion either way on what is best. So we work with both.

Belgium has had a big influence on Electronic music. Is Belgium more open to electronic music than the rest of Europe?

Martin: I don’t know whether we’re more open. But we do have a big history of electronic music in Belgium. You’ve got the New Beat of the 80’s, then you have 2 Many DJ’s & Soulwax who opened a lot of doors for Belgium producers. They’re a big inspiration for a lot of young people out here and for us. But, I think there’s a lot to get inspired by and influence by, because there’s a lot of coverage in mainstream media, not just the internet. So you definitely get a head start here in Belgium.

What’s the story behind the name Mumbai Science ? You used to perform under different name? Tell us about that.

Martin: Yes. We used to perform under the name Project Cyborg. But, it was time for a new chapter in our professional lives and our musical lives. It sounds really heavy when I say it like that. But, basically we changed the name when we signed the Lektroluv. The science part is because we both really into science. We were both scientists before we came to be producers and DJ’s. So when you look at like that it’s quite obvious. We’ve never been to Mumbai, but we’ll be there in January. So were pretty excited about it. Although we have no idea what to expect. According to Facebook, we have load of fans in India, but that might be because of the name Mumbai, than the music, haha.

Lotus was charted by loads different acts from Boys Noise to 2 Many DJ’s. For you what was the main highlight of 2011?

Martin: It’s has to be I Love Techno.

Jonas: I Love Techno.

Martin: I was a few weeks ago, we were there with all the big acts like Boyz Noise and Tiga. We had such an amazing set there, we closed the festival from 5am to 7:30am on the last day. There were still thousands of people dancing into the early morning. We got to talk to a lot people about the new EP and got great feedback and Boys Noise finished his set with our new track which was pretty amazing.

Jonas: We grew up with this festival, we used to go when we were 14. So when we got the chance to close it, that was a pretty special moment.

You’ve obviously have a history playing Live. Is this something you want to do with Mumbai Science?

Jonas: It’s certainly something we want to do someday. But, we haven’t really got anything planned. I guess if we were to do again, it would have to be perfect, but at the moment, I just can’t see our songs played live. I just don’t think we’re big enough to do it yet.

Martin: I love to DJ, and there’s too many great tracks out at the moment, so I’d be too hungry to do more if we were only doing live shows.

Jonas: the only reason why I think about it now is I miss it, it’s totally different when you play live then when you DJ.

Martin: If we do an album, it obviously would be the next logical next step. We would have worked on it for a long time and the music would be in our blood  - then it would be obvious to do a live show, but as we’re not there yet, we haven’t really thought about it, but maybe one day.

Have you begun to work on a Mumbai Science album?

Jonas: No, we’re only just finishing the final series of the EP’s, so were not speaking about it right now.

So we can’t expect an album in 2012?

Martin: No. If we make a Mumbai Science album it has to be perfect. We want to take our time. You have only got one debut album, and we’d want to make sure it’s just perfect.

If you’re studio was on fire and you go back and save one thing, what would it be and why?

Jonas: hahaha, I would recover Martin, hahaha.

Martin: I would recover the hard disks.

Jonas: Ah c’mon, that’s harsh. You’re breaking my heart.

Who have been big musical influences when you were young?

Jonas: The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk. It’s everything we know.

Martin: Laurent Garnier was a big influence for me, he was one of my first experiences with dance music. For non-dance music it would have to be Soulwax. We even used to cover Soulwax tracks in our band. Against everyone’s advice, though.

How do you see the electronic scene evolving in Belgium?

Martin: At the moment Dubstep is really big with kids over here, we tend to make music that we think people will like. We would never make dubstep. I just don’t see what a dubstep Mumbai Science track would sound like. It’s a cool genre, but it’s not something we would never do. I like to listening to it, but not to rave too. But, that’s because I don’t think I could actually dance to it.

Techno-wise who has been a big influence on you?

Martin: We don’t know a lot of about Berlin or Detroit techno, but we just try and incorporate that underground vibe into our music. We would go to clubs, and there would always be a dark room playing techno, we wouldn’t know the songs being played, but we just really liked it, and wanted to bring those influences into our music.

Who should we be looking out for in the 2012?

Martin: Attaque, who releases on Bad Life. He’s making some excellent music.

Jonas: TWR72, their tracks really surprise us everytime we hear them, and even more when we play them out.

There’s a serious side to Ronika-ka-ka-ka-ka, (who knew?) her new track ‘Clock’ features mature vocals from Charles Washington and shows that she knows how to mix things up a bit.

Her first couple of tracks were firmly in the realm of party disco, ‘Clock’, however, is a more considered duet, it still keeps Ronny’s unique vocal talents, but they’re tempered with the deeper, more languid vocals from Washington – it’s more synth-pop than disco, but shows this Madonna of the midlands is talent that is definitely worth keeping and eye out for in 2012 and beyond.

Unsurprisingly he nails it. His remix leans a bit more towards electro house than many of his previous remixes, he also combines elements of fidget and french touch into this heady dance floor broth

As with many of his remixes he takes the vocal and makes it the centre-piece of the remix – throws in a load of sweet synths, snappy drums and a colossal breakdown to really hit that electro sweet spot.

The first time we came across Little Boots, was, bizarrely, BBC breakfast, a young, blonde girl sat at a piano, singing and playing a tenorion - the whole performance was really impressive. Well, she’s back, and sporting a new musical style: it’s still synth-pop. But she’s now leaning more towards the current nu-disco vogue with the help of SMD’s James Ford.

Her latest track ‘Shake’ has been getting a lot of love on the blogs and marks the return of the little pop princess, but this time, her music has more of an edge to it. It’s more club-friendly, and comes with lashings of analog goodness from SMD’s James Ford – but, crucially, keeps her trademark satin-soft vocals.

Constructed in one afternoon after a spontaneous liaison with James Ford.“The song came in the latter stages of writing the new album,” Boots explains. “James and I had been emailing, and unusually both had a free day. It was one of those that just came out. Immediately it felt right. It also shed a new light on a lot of the other songs I’d been working on for the album.”

‘Shake’ was released on limited edition collector’s vinyl and digital download, a grassroots return for a true DIY superstar. True to form, it has been remixed by some of Boots’ favourite dance dons-of-the-moment, Azari & III and Crazy P.

Today you can grab the Crazy P remix for free, who crafts the original into an elegant disco gem, and in the process brings the vocal to the forefront of the track.

Hoaxx are a electro duo from London, and if you’ve been a long-term reader of HBF you might remember they were one of the first unknown acts we threw our support behind. Well, its been over 12 months since they’ve released an original piece music, sure, they’ve been busy remixing and touring, but this particular production hiatus ends today with ‘Love Track’ featuring Dee Scott.

Over the last 12 months, electro and disco has collided and ‘Love Track’ reflects this sea-change. It’s got all the power and energy that we’d associate with 2007 electro; big French electro synths, white noise and big kicks. But the Hoaxx boy’s have cleverly balanced it with a catchy pop vocal, lashings of disco violins and a funky piano riff.

Their generosity doesn’t stop there, they’ve assembled a stellar collection of remixes, which further adds to the song’s impact. There’s quite literally something for everyone, you’ve got deep, thudding house remix from Ryan Riot, who catches the vocal in a sweet loop and then layers and layers it with basslines, synths and percussion. There’s the obligatory nod to the dubstep lovers out there, and, actually, we don’t mind the Mr Wonk’s Green Mask effort, he goes a formulaic Feed Me-style aesthetic, opposed to the more dumb-step style of Skrilly.

For those of you who prefer their electronic music a little more highbrow and less obvious – there’s a great left-field, stripped back re-rub from Lab Creation – we’d call it percussive drums and bass if we were forced to pigeonhole, but in a French guise. Eby Le Beatz’s remix takes the vocal and runs with it to make a piece of theatrical electro – it’s full of folksy hooks a la MGMT, and after a couple of listens you’ll be totally convinced, the clever panning of some of the synth basslines are particularly brilliant. For us, it’s probably the dark horse of the bunch. To finish you’ve got another electro house remix, this time its from Dee Scott, who employs a less is more approach, thankfully it provides a decent counter to the noisey win that has come before it. Oliver is a name you’re probably going to hear time and time again over the next 12 months (so get used to it), they’re a production duo from LA, and are making some of the most amazing nu-disco around at the moment – multiple remixes and a spot of Aeroplane’s compilation has seen their star rise.

Today’s freebie is no exception, a free remix Sneaky Soundsystem’s second single ‘Big’. We’re probably massively late to this track, but it’s such a great piece of driving synth-pop/electro – we had to come back to it.

It’s swashbuckling ride of big chorus’, even bigger keys, vocals and a euphoric hands-in-the-air breakdown. It’s the sought of track that if you heard it in a blind listening, you’d probably think it was something to do with Stuart Price.

We’ve been keeping an ear out for Pyramid for a while now and everything he has sent over has been getting steadily better, but, his latest EP ‘Rising Day’ has taken a massive step forward in both quality and listenability. When we first came across his music it took a lot cues from films scores, with plenty of textures and soundscapes, but ‘Rising Day’ is firmly anchored his sound in the dance floor.

His latest offering takes inspiration from the greats of French electronics music, you’ve got the futuristic synths of Daft Punk, the textured, glitchy production of Justice, the orchestral narrative of Danger and the uncompromising energy of Vitalic – he’s managed to bring all of these influences together in a way that doesn’t rip them off, but builds upon them with his own unique sound.

It starts with ‘Citizen’ a retro/futuristic cacophony of bleeping synths, vibrating basslines and a thick smattering of Justice glitch rock. Next up is ’Cosmos’ which has the grandeur of a Danger track, but with a swashbuckling orchestral vibe. It’s brimming with exciting synths that tingle your senses. It shows just how much Etienne has improved in such short space of time. When you eventually hear the break down, which marries intensifying synths, violins with grand piano riff, you know that this EP is something quite special.

‘Run’ is served on a bed of menacing breakbeat drums, and even more menacing basslines – it’s probably our favourite from the EP and ends up sound like a piece of big room electro a la DeadMau5 – but with plenty of French flamboyancy. ‘Sleeping Fox’ is a more downbeat, but still managed to pack a real punch, it’s full of deep melancholic synths, precise percussion and incorporates darker, more emotive tones than the previous tracks. ‘Synthesis’ does exactly what you think it will, laying grimey synths, big drums and pulsating kicks to make for an exciting and fitting crescendo.

Theatre of Delays is a chap from Germany, he got in contact to say how much he liked the HBF logo (flattery get’s you everywhere) and would we mind taking a peep at some of his tracks on Soundcloud.

So, we did the decent thing and set sail to his page, and came across his remix of The Rapture’s ‘In Grace Of Your Love’. Next to the track was the genre of ‘Weird Disco’…..god not another one. But, in actual fact his we were pleasantly surprised, his remix was really quite good. Now, the production is….how should we say this, a little rough around the edges. But for us his remix sounds across between the Booka Shade of old, a bit of Jaydee’s ‘Plastic Dreams’ with just a sprinkling of deep house pessimism. He could be one to keep an ear out for.

We’ve been meaning to post the new Irish Steph release – so here it is – as you may well know we’ve following this French electro artist since we posted ‘Power’ and if you take the time to go back and listen, it still shines as a perfect example noisey French win.

So now we come to his new release ‘Crush’ – it’s similar in its adventurousness; with an unusual blend of electro, glitch and……rap – yes. We said rap – we were as disappoint as you are, but it’s not all hoes and 40’s. Quite the opposite.

And when you hear what Eumig & Chinon do with their remix you’ll know it hasn’t stepped across that ill-fated line; it’s not too cheesey.

Next is ‘Just Maggie’ and for us is the meat in the musical sandwich – it’s another tip of the hat to Steph’s fascination with Ireland, and well, Irish music. We know it sounds like a poposterous idea. Irish folk music and Electro – it will never work. Well you’d be wrong, he makes it work.

On remix duties you have a plethora of up-and-coming whipper snapper’s. First is Eumig & Chinon – who, rumour has it, is involved in a ruse and is just the one person. Anyway, they, him or it, have done a quite a job on the remix, taking it into the Shook/Breakbot territory – always a good move for us.

The other remixes come from NightBreaker; who takes it back to 2007, and does a splendid job – lookout for him. The Blister Boys go a similar route as Euming, but a more disco/electro tip. And to finish LBCK slice and dice and come up with something similar to a Feed Me way of thinking – for us it’s the dark horse of the bunch.

We’re not going to post all tracks….well because we’re not Earmilk. But it’s a very good EP and is worth a solid HBF Rating of 8/10.
