Happy accidents are often the moments of genius when it comes to making music – and that’s exactly what happened to Montreal-based producer Dave Switch when creating his first track under new alias Trouble Star.
“While experimenting with recording an 808 drum machine and moog synth directly into a cheap 1970s stereo tape recorder. The audio signal became too hot for the recorder to handle, and it began to distort the tape recording, resulting in a harsh crackling distortion that I thought sounded great,” explains the producer. “Especially on the kickdrum. This lo-fi techno sound became the basis for this song and the beginning inspiration for this project.”
The producer’s ‘Can’t Shake ‘Em’ is full of modulating synths lines, clattering drums lines and frenzied basslines that all combine to gives the track its warehouse credentials.
