Tequila is often associated with cheap salt and even cheaper lemon. At a recent event hosted by I-D Magazine, chef and food critic Gizzi Erskine was challenged to change people’s perception of the Mexican staple with a lavish event hosted by Don Julio, Mexico’s luxury tequila, dubbed ‘La Cantina Primavera’
At the event – which saw a host of celebrities including Mark Ronson, his wife Josephine De La Baum and Millie Mackintosh in attendance – guests were treated to some stunning Tequila cocktails alongside some mouth-watering Mexican food that showcased a new, contemporary side of Mexican culture that many might not think exists.
Alongside Gizzi Erskine, renowned mixologist Deano Moncrieffe was on hand to create some truly unique taste experiences, giving classic cocktails a unique modern twist including the Don Julio Los Altos Margarita, Don Julio Anejo Old Fashioned and the Paper Heart.
Check the video above and then grab your cocktail shaker and have a go yourself – we can guarantee after one sip you’ll never grab the salt and lemon when someone offers you Tequila ever again.
Don Julio Los Altos Margarita
50ml Don Julio Blanco
25ml agave syrup
20ml freshly squeezed lime
Topped up with soda water and garnished with sprig of mint and lime wedge
Shake first 3 ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with cubed ice and then strain into highball/tall glass before topping up with soda. TIP: you can twist this long version of a margarita by using 25ml of Triple sec or Grand Marnier and topping up with tonic instead of soda water.
