It’s no surprise that L’Etranger’s debut release on La Bombe is riding high on Beatport’s indie dance charts, it’s one of those great EPs where the artist is clearly trying to experiment, but, crucially, hasn’t gone too far in the pursuit of being different.

‘Binary’ is a prime example: it’s still filtered French house, but laced with off-the-cuff synth work, sputtering oizo drum patterns and rasping hooks. It’s a little off-putting at first, but after a few listens you’ll be hooked by complexity of the composition.

L’Etrager ‘1997’ is out now via La Bombe.
